…So the FIFA 2014 World Cup is over. Thankfully, good music isn’t. It stays with you, no matter where you go, no matter what you do.
And few do this better than Wolves At The Gate.
I stumbled upon these guys a few years back (one of the best accidents ever) on YouTube. It was their single, Heralds, from their. I think I was really distracted that particular day, cos I saved it and completely forgot about it, until I stumbled upon it once again a few weeks later. And I got hooked. Then, they captivated the world with Captors, an album that left me wondering just how they were going to top it.
I shouldn’t have feared. When you have the Holy Spirit at work within you, your latter will always be greater than your former.
VxV-pronounced ‘5 by 5’- is the 2nd studio album by WATG, featuring some of the most awesome songs you will ever hear. An album that has garnered rave reviews from both Christians and non-Christians alike, VxV is an album that is heavy not just in beat, but in emotions, lyrical content and message.

(Nick Detty: Dirty Vocals)

The album kicks off with a declaration of Faith and a prayer, which is a central theme throughout the album, foreshadowing the songs, each one having its own story, from ‘Wake Up’ which is like a wake-up call to ‘Relief’ which tells us that the only solace we have is in Christ not in cutting ourselves, drugs etc; from ‘The Bird And The Snake’ which warns against trading with the devil to ‘The Father’s Bargain, a song based on the story of the same name by 1600s-era Puritan writer John Flavel which seeks to examine the extraordinary kind of love that persuaded Christ to come down to Earth and die for our sins.

(Steve Cobucci: Guitarist and Lead Vocalist)

VxV is an explosive album filled with amazing songs and with their brand of pull-release style of singing, Steve Cobucci and Nick Detty complement each other perfectly. Carrying on with their tradition of using some of the most innovative percussive styles in the genre today, this album will rock your world. Add to this the added bonus that this album makes you feel like you are listening to them live, and you see why this album is a must-have.
The most important thing about this album, however, is the message it spreads and the mission that backs it. Vocalist Steve Cobucci says (as per the artist page on the Solid State Records website):
“Peple’s greatest need is for Christ, not another Christian band. Music is just a form of how we have been equipped to get the Gospel out to the lost who do not know the saving Grace of God.”

With VxV, WATG have surpassed themselves, and it is interesting to see how they will beat this in the coming years. However, knowing the Holy Spirit, I am sure the next album will leave this one in the dust. But for now, this is it.
Oh boy, this is IT.

Rating: 9/10.

On a lighter note, Happy Birthday to me. Yes.
